San Diego Regional Center Employees Unite for Workplace Improvements

A majority of San Diego Regional Center employees, who provide services for adults and children living with developmental disabilities in San Diego and Imperial Counties, voted June 9, 2010 to join SEIU Local 221.

San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) employees were excited about the victory.

“Winning our union gives us a chance to participate with other regional centers in our state to advocate for services for our consumers,” Mimi Thompson, a San Diego Regional Center Service Coordinator said.

"Winning our union gives me a voice at work to advocate for our consumers and our employees," LeighAnn Harms, a Service Coordinator said.

"Winning means we can now join 10 other regional centers with SEIU members to advocate for our consumers at the state and national level," Support Staff Maritza Gates said. "Having a union means I have a voice in decision making and my rights are protected."

"Winning means we now have a voice at the SDRC," Theresa Wells, a Service Coordinator said.

SEIU Local 221 will represent over 400 employees at the San Diego Regional Center. The regional center employees in San Diego and Imperial Counties join 10 other regional centers in California that are represented by SEIU.
