Government Relations at Local 221

Service Employees International Union Local 221 members are not involved in lobbying elected officials, testifying about budgets and campaigning for candidates based on a choice, but out of necessity.

Elected officials vote on our contracts, fund our programs and introduce and approve legislative fixes affecting our jobs. As a public sector employee, we are directly linked to the action of elected officials. If we choose not to speak for ourselves, then we relinquish our voice and allow someone else to speak on our behalf who may not share or views or have our best interest in mind.

This is why it is vital we help elect candidates to office that understand working people and once they are in office, lobby them and hold them accountable or remove them from office if they are no longer an advocate for working people.

Our Local’s Government and Community Relations Department is here to assist us to speak for ourselves by:

Electing individuals who actively support working people issues;

Lobbying for legislative solutions and funds that affect our jobs;

Fighting for funding of programs affecting our jobs and lives;

If you would like to join in, then please contact a Worksite Organizer or our Local’s Government and Community Relations Department at (858) 560-0151.

"If I had not gotten involved in the Local's Government and Community Relations Department, then I would have continued to see members at my work site lose their jobs due to budget cuts."

- Diane Cates, San Diego County Child Support Services & Member Political Organizer

"I hear politicians tell people all the time how they will do this and that for me, but by working with the Government and Community Relations Department I know I can actually hold them accountable."

– Amy Cross, San Diego County Mental Health Case Management & Member Political Organizer
